Today's Tickets @ 2 Song: "(Christmas)Baby Please Come Home" by U2

The Fifa 2014 World Cup is in full swing in Brazil and as ‘football’ fever sweeps the globe in the biggest sporting event in the world, some of us who’ve never watched the game are feeling a bit lost on how it all works.

So we thought who better to ask for a rundown of how the World Cup scoring and rules work than the true fans themselves. We asked listeners to call in and give us a quick overview of the game for someone who’s never watched before. K-EARTH 101 listener Paul, who tells us he’s grown up playing soccer his entire life, so graciously called in to explain how the game works.

Here’s a quick overview of what we learned from Paul:

  • There are four teams in each group; eight groups total
  • In those groups, each team will play each other for a total of three games per team
  • Teams earn points to advance to the next round; Teams get three points for a win and one point for a draw
  • The goals are the tie-breakers; the team that has the largest goal differential (goals scored minus goals they allow) will advance

Still lost? Listen to the clip below for Paul’s complete guide to the World Cup for beginners:
