World Cup: USA vs. Belgium Cheat Sheet

Team USA is going face to face with Belgium this afternoon in the knockout round of the 2014 World Cup, with a chance to move on to the quarterfinals on the line.

Here’s a little cheat sheet with tidbits on each nation going into this do-or-die game against Belgium via the New York Daily News:

Team Nicknames:

U.S.: The Yanks, or the Stars and Stripes, referring to the American flag.

Belgium: “Les Diables Rouges,” or “The Red Devils.”

Celebrity fans:

U.S.: Olivia Munn, Paris Hilton, Mayor de Blasio, Jimmy Fallon, who’ve all tweeted their Team USA support.

Belgium: Possibly Belgian stars Jean Claude Van Damme, Johnny Galecki, and singer Gotye, all born in Belgium

Beers of choice:

U.S.: Bud Light and Coors Light – both light beers with 4.2% alcohol by volume.

Belgium: Jupiler, a pale ale with 5 .2% alcohol by volume.

Team Jerseys:

U.S.: White polo shirt with red trim (home), and a crew neck jersey with red, white and blue color blocking (away), by Nike.

Belgium: Retro red jersey with their flag-inspired red, yellow and black stripes on the neck and sleeves, plus a crown logo on the front (home), and black with the same stripe detailing on the neck and sleeves, plus cross-body red and yellow stripes (away) by Burrda Sports.

Fan chants:

U.S.: “U! S! A! … U! S! A!” or “I believe that we will win!”

Belgium: “Come On Belgium!” or “Reds Go Marching In”

Official languages:

U.S.: English

Belgium: French, Flemish, German

World Cup standing:

U.S.: Beat Ghana 2-1, but drew to Portugal 2-2 and lost to Germany 0-1.

Belgium: Undefeated after beating Algeria 2-1, Russia 1-0 and Korea Republic 1-0.

World Cup history:

U.S.: Made the semifinals in 1930, and beat England in 1950.

Belgium: Came in fourth place in 1986.
