Binge-watching has been everyone’s favorite pastime since circa 2011, but it’s said to be facing a backlash. Of course, we’re not buying it since there’s nothing more satisfying than sitting in air conditioning for an entire summer weekend watching every episode of a particular streaming series back to back to back.
Most binge-watching sessions however seem to be focused on scripted shows rather than reality TV. Perhaps for one sole reason: it sounds much cooler to say you spent all weekend binging House of Cards or Breaking Bad than consuming empty TV calories like the Real Housewives of wherever.
But, sometimes a heady TV binge can be too much and you need a palette cleanser. Our list is a satisfying but tasty binge watch of current reality shows that (for the most part) aren’t things you’d be ashamed to tell someone you’ve been watching.
Filled with little nuggets of reality gold available on the various streaming services, we went deep diving so you wouldn’t have to.
Consider these picks the “beach reads” of the summer binge-watching season.
1. Bar Rescue
The problem with so many reality shows is that they are just too focused on putting people in alcohol-fueled situations where they can’t help but do terrible, embarrassing things. Bar Rescue takes that formula and flips it on its head. Host Jon Taffer is actually saving people’s livelihoods by rehabbing their failing bars, which gives each episode a palpable sense of drama and a need for redemption.
This show is for those who want to see people make terrible decisions and then get yelled at for them. Also the perfect binge for anyone who likes seeing dramatic makeovers.
