Actor, comedian, musician and frequent napper, Jack Black joined us on The K-EARTH 101 Morning Show today to talk about his new HBO show The Brink making its debut this Sunday!
Black has starred in dozens of movies in his career from funny roles like School of Rock and Kung Fu Panda to dramatic roles like King Kong. So what made him make the jump to television for this new series?
“In many ways [TV] is a superior way of telling a story – the longform…you can go way deeper into the character and the reality of the world,” he said.
The Brink is a half-hour dark comedy about the “geopolitical crisis and its effect on three disparate and desperate men.” Black plays a Foreign Service officer, Alex Talbot, alongside Tim Robbins, who plays U.S. Secretary of State Walter Larson, and Pablo Schreiber, who plays Zeke Tilson, a Navy fighter pilot.
“These three compromised souls must pull through the chaos around them to save the planet from World War Three,” according to the show description.
Black tells us the whole idea for the show came after the creator, Roberto Benabib, saw a museum exhibit on the films of Stanley Kubrick. After visiting the display for Dr. Strangelove, Benabib got the idea to create a dark comedy about war to the small screen.
“Roberto said ‘there’s nothing like this on television. I want to make a TV show that’s like Dr. Strangelove.’ So that was the inspiration of the whole thing,” he explained.
