This morning we had a special treat with legendary game host and TV personality Bob Eubanks stopping by the K-EARTH 101 Morning Show!
Other than being the host of the original host of Newlywed Game, Bob is known for his incredible career as a concert promoter in Los Angeles, most famously bringing The Beatles to the Hollywood Bowl for the first time in 1965.
In celebration of the recent 50th anniversary of The Beatles touring in the U.S. for the first time, Bob released a limited edition concert poster from the Hollywood Bowl shows for the ultimate Beatles fans.
Since there was no official concert poster of the shows back then, Bob used an ad that was placed in the L.A. Times to promote the show.
He told us how the idea for these collectors items came about.
“I went on the Internet one day and I saw this picture that I had signed and this guy wanted $4,000 for it. I said ‘whoa,’ he was telling lies that there were some posters left,” he explained. “Anyway, I had a thousand of them printed up and if anybody’s interested, you can go to bebeatles.com.”
He also shared some behind the scenes stories of his time promoting these historic shows, including a story of what really inspired the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
“I had to give them a case of Dr. Pepper in the dressing room – this was ’64 – and they couldn’t hear themselves sing, so what they did at the end of the 35 minutes they performed, Lennon put his guitar down, yelled over to us ‘We’re nothing but a Dr. Pepper pickup band,’ and they left,” he explained. “So they decided they’re going to do a song about Dr. Pepper, and they said ‘well you’re going to get sued you guys if you do it,’ so they changed it to…”
And Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was born! Bob adds that “if you listen to the words, you can almost put Dr. Pepper in there and it works.”
While Bob was in studio, we decided to play an updated version of The Newlywed Game called Work Mates! He asked Gary three questions about Lisa; What’s Lisa’s most annoying habit? Would you say Lisa is ‘sexy,’ ‘pretty’ or ‘intelligent’? And if the two of you were stuck on a deserted island, how long before she starts to look good?
Did any of their answers match? Find out how they did by listening to the clip below!
