A couple weeks ago, we told you that Jimmy Fallon injured his finger, which forced The Tonight Show to air re-runs, but what we didn’t know was just how bad the injury was.
Last night, Fallon triumphantly returned for the first time since injuring his finger, which he explained in detail how it all happened. He told viewers that he almost ripped his finger off after he tripped on a rug – “that my wife loves and I can’t wait to burn” – and caught his ring on the countertop.
“I tripped and fell and I caught my fall, so I’m getting up and my finger’s sideways. I go ‘I broke my finger. I think I broke my finger.’ They go ‘you didn’t break your finger.’ It’s a thing called ring avulsion,” he explained. “So basically what it is, my ring got caught on the countertop when I was going down and stuck there and pulled my finger off.”
He went on to say that “the odds aren’t great with these things” and they “usually just cut your finger off” with these injuries. Luckily for Fallon, doctors were able to save his finger by doing six hours of micro-surgery and taking a vein out of his foot to attach in his finger.
Fallon was in ICU at Bellvue Hospital in New York City for 10 days after the injury. He should be able to regain feeling in his hand after about eight weeks of recovery.
