Thanksgiving can be a stressful time for everyone, especially if you’re spending the holiday with your significant other’s family for the very first time. Thankfully, Glamour magazine came up with a few helpful tips to help take the edge off of meeting his/her family during the holidays. Check out these helpful do’s and don’ts to help you make that great first impression!

DO: Participate in family traditions

Even if it seems weird and wacky from what you’re used to, these traditions are important to him and his family. And if you see any future with your man, these could become your traditions too.

DON’T: Cling to him

Even if you’re overwhelmed by meeting his family, it’s important to make an effort to get to know them and form your own bond with his family.

DO: Offer to help

You’ll make a great impression if you help out in the kitchen, clean up after dinner or even watch after the kids in the family. Whatever it is, find a way to contribute during the get together.

DON’T: Get drunk

Even though a little liquid courage might take the edge and nervousness off, you’ll more likely to do something embarrassing if you drink. Remember, the goal of meeting his family for the first time is to make a good impression.

DO: Be yourself

You man is with you for a reason and wants to introduce to his family, so just relax and be yourself! If he likes you, then his family will too.

DON’T: Get involved in drama

Every family has their family drama that could go way back, so it’s important not to get involved in any arguments that come up over dinner. This is the time to meet his family, not make enemies with them.
