Social media tributes for Leon Russell poured in overnight from his musical contemporaries, who admired his influence, talent and enduring legacy. Elton John called Russell a “mentor and inspiration” while Cat Stevens said he was “a great influence.” Artists from every end of the genre spectrum celebrated Russell’s long career producing, writing songs, and recording his own music: Chaka Kkan called him “a prolific talent” while Kings of Leon’s Nathan Followill celebrated his “legend.” Steve Martin directed his followers to Russell’s “masterpiece,” “A Song for You.”
