How to Help Those Who Are Unemployed During the Coronavirus Pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic continues to keep millions of Americans unemployed.

In April, the unemployment rate jumped to 14.7 percent - the worst it has been since the Great Depression.

More than 33.5 million American workers filed for benefits since the stay-at-home orders went into effect in mid-March across the United States.

NBC News shared advice on how you can help unemployed Americans, even if you lost your job yourself.

If you are a person that knows someone who just lost their job, it's hard to know how to help them right away. Amanda Clayman, a psychotherapist and financial wellness advocate at Prudential, says when someone is unemployed, the problem cannot be solved overnight.

While trying to help loved ones, Clayman added that sometimes our assumptions might be very wrong. She said the smartest thing to do is listen to their conversations and see what they bring up.

“If your friend is in a bad place and you want to help, you can say, ‘I want to help, but I’m worried about the position I’m in, too,’” Clayman said.

While people continue to social distance, it is essential to be there for those you love since self-isolation can get lonely. Not every conversation needs to be serious, and you can just reach out and ask how they are.

For people who are living with a family member, partner, or roommate that just got laid off, Clayman said it is vital that you can give that person space in a healthy way.

If you’re looking to help others in your community who are out of work, you can check in with your neighbors and donate to community foundations.
